Year 4
Answering the Cry for Freedom (Years 4-6)
Answering the Cry for Freedom: stories of African Americans and the American Revolution by Gretchen Woelfle is assigned over 3 years, several chapters each term. I have written summaries of each reading assignment and included maps and words to define.
Minn of the Mississippi
This is a summary of my pre-readings with notes on what to have the boys label or draw on the map from Beautiful Feet Books. I used the map from Little School House in the Suburbs to follow where Minn goes each chapter. This guide also has some links to relevant videos and pictures.
La Salle of the Mississippi (Replacement for Minn of the Mississippi)
After reading Minn of the Mississippi with M, I decided to find a living book that would be more interesting and easier to follow. I choose La Salle of the Mississippi by Ronald Syme because it is a fast paced adventure story about a fearless and determined man, telling a part of history that is only touched upon in other readings. Click the image at left to download a reading guide that follows the same schedule as Minn.
The Ocean of Truth
This guide has a summary for each chapter as well as several words to define before reading and a couple of links.
Poor Richard
I pre-read Poor Richard and wrote down my narrations for each chapter. I also included locations to map for each chapter and links to relevant videos.
Stories From Rome
In Year 4 I decided to substitute Plutarch with Stories from the History of Rome to introduce us both to Roman History.
I prepared a document that includes
- A schedule of what to read each week
- Summaries of each chapter
- A list of names and places to write on the white board before reading
- Links to maps
- Links to pictures and videos
