I chose The Radium Woman: The Life of Marie Curie by Eleanor Doorly for the biography of Marie Curie in Year 5. This guide includes weekly reading assingments, summaries of each chapter, words to define, places to locate on a map, and ideas for keeping a century chart.

Teddy Roosevelt Biography

I have substituted this biography of Teddy Roosevelt in place of the one recommended on the AO site. I felt it was a better fit for M’s reading level and a shorter length to fit our schedule. This guide includes chapter summaries, maps, and occasional links.

George Washington Carver Biography

I chose the book Dr. George Washington Carver: Scientist by Shirley Graham and George D. Lipscomb. This book is found on archive.com and used copies are readily available and affordable. I first read the biography by Collins but rejected it after the first several chapters because of the way the enslavers are romanticized.

This document includes summaries, maps, dates, and links to resources.

African Icons (replacing/supplementing Answering the Cry)

In the Year 5 weekly schedule, I have allotted 10 minutes a day for independent reading. This includes Wild Animals, Literature, and Biography as well as Answering the Cry. I decided to only use the first ATC story and then use African Icons. Since AO6 will start studying Ancient Rome, I wanted to include some ancient African history as well. And it fit well here. This guide covers 21 weekly readings and includes maps and links to other resources. I have also included a page of student map work for each chapter.

Anatomy (replacing Exploring Creation with Human Anatomy and Physiology)

In place of the AO recommended textbook for anatomy, I chose to use the alternatives in this 36-week schedule covering the following topics:

  • Cells (6 weeks)
  • Skeletal System (6 weeks)
  • Muscular System (6 weeks)
  • Circulatory System (3 weeks)
  • Respiratory System (4 weeks)
  • Digestive (8 weeks)
  • Health and Nutrition (4 weeks)
